Yahoo to acquire Inktomi for £146 million - 23 Dec 2002
Terry Semel, Yahoo Chairman and CEO announced in a prepared statement that the acquisition was intended to provide its users with the best search solutions on the web.
With the cash purchase of Inktomi at $1.65 per share likely to be finalised in the first quarter of 2003, when we'll start to see Inktomi results on Yahoo is unclear. Its seems Yahoo is distancing itself from Google, who it only recently resigned with for search results. The pressure will certainly be on search engine rivals such as Lycos.
David Peterschmidt, Inktomi's chairman and CEO, stated the companies ambitions to make “the Inktomi-Yahoo search offering the standard-bearer for searching on the Web.” Saying that the purchase matches "premier Web search technology" and "Yahoo!'s global reach and commitment to providing the best user experience on the Web".
Its a move which has come as a shock to most search engine optimisation people and will see many rushing off to brush up on the Inktomi optimisation techniques. It can only be good for the industry, increased competition yet again and a move away from the Google monopoly that's been seen of late.
The deal signed by Yahoo with Google didn't prevent them from using other search results and Yahoo now will be.
